It all started in the spring of 1962, when mother of six Timmy Jean Lindsay lay on the operating table at Jefferson Davis Hospital in Houston, Texas. Two hours later she was already thinking about buying a bra a size larger.
“She seemed beautiful to me. It was soft to the touch and very reminiscent of the real thing,” Lindsay, now 80, recalls her feelings after the operation. “The full realization of what happened was when I walked outside and men started whistling at me,” Lindsay says.
The participant in that first operation, which became history, did not intend to have a breast augmentation. She went to the hospital to have a tattoo removed on her chest, and doctors asked her to volunteer for her first breast augmentation surgery. Surgeons Frank Giro and Thomas Cronin operated. According to historians, it was Jiro who invented a new type of breast implant.
“Frank Giro clutched a plastic bag of blood for a transfusion and noticed the resemblance to a woman’s breast,” says Teresa Riordan, author of “Creating Beauty: The Story of the Innovations That Made Us Beautiful.”

Timmy Gene Lindsey remembers almost nothing about that day. “I just remember feeling something heavy on my chest after the surgery, but after three or four days the pain went away,” says Lindsey.

From 1992 to 2006, silicone implants disappeared from the American market by order of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), due to an abnormally high number of reports of ruptures and leaks. Surgeons continued to use saline-filled implants. After a series of studies, the FDA concluded that silicone breasts are relatively safe, despite frequent complications and a small risk of lymphoma. At the end of 2011, a scandal broke out with the French company Poly Implant Prothese (PIP), which was involved in the production and sale of defective silicone breast implants.
