Ulf Bo Samuelson

(born March 26, 1964) is a Swedish-American former professional ice hockey defenseman who currently serves as an assistant coach for the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League. [1] He played several seasons in the NHL with the Hartford Whalers, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers. He was a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Penguins in 1991 and 1992.

During his playing career, Samuelsson was considered by NHL stars to be "the most hated man in hockey"; The New York Times described him as "the lowest form of human being" and a man whose game amounts to "trying to hurt you and throw you out of your game." [2] He is also known for the knee-to-knee hit on Boston Bruins Cam Neely during the 1991 playoffs, which ended Neely's career entirely five years later.

Gaming career[edit]

Samuelsson was selected 67th overall by the Hartford Whalers in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft. In February 1987, Samuelsson played in the "Rendez-vous '87" series as a member of the NHL All-Stars. Two series of games between the NHL All-Star Game and the Soviet team took place in Quebec and replaced the mid-season NHL All-Star game in the 1986–87 season.

He was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins along with Ron Francis in 1991 and was a member of Pittsburgh's Stanley Cup winning teams in 1991 and 1992. He scored the 1991 Stanley Cup-winning goal in Game 6 of the Finals against the Minnesota North Stars at 2:00 of the first period in what became an 8–0 blowout victory for Pittsburgh.

In a game against the Boston Bruins during the 1991 Stanley Cup playoffs, Samuelsson hit Bruins star forward Cam Neely while performing a body check, causing Neely to be injured and develop a condition called myositis ossificans, which eventually ended his career. [3]

Famously, in 1995, Samuelsson, while a member of the New York Rangers, was knocked unconscious by a hard hit to the face from Ty Domi of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Domi received an eight-game suspension and a fine for the incident, which some described as one of the cheapest shots in NHL history. Samuelsson played 1,080 NHL games, scoring 57 goals and 275 assists for 332 points. He has accumulated 2,453 penalty minutes in his career.

During the Nagano Olympics, he was kicked off the Swedish team when it was discovered that he had applied for and received U.S. citizenship. His Swedish citizenship was revoked and he was not allowed to play. The entire ordeal was listed as the 72nd most important international story by the IIHF at its centenary celebrations in 2008.[6]

Corr.: How are things going with plastic surgery and cosmetology in Sweden?

Professor Samuelsson: In our country we do not have such a specialty - “cosmetologist”. There are only dermatologists and plastic surgeons. Like everywhere else, we have both excellent specialists and not so great ones. Therefore, in Sweden, and in Russia, in any other country, it is extremely important for the patient to find out how good the surgeon he has chosen is, whether he ended up in a good clinic or not. It's not always easy. Patients have to work hard to understand which of the available options is the best, safest.

Corr.: Are the requirements of Russian and Swedish patients different?

Professor Samuelsson: Swedish patients have a clearer idea of ​​what they want, while Russian patients often say, “Do what you think suits me best.” In Sweden I ask what the patient wants. In Russia, patients often ask me what they need to do. And, of course, the types of appearance of Russian and Swedish patients are noticeably different. This means that in order to fulfill the wishes of Russian patients in the best possible way, you need to choose slightly different techniques and approach.

Corr.: How do you feel about innovations in cosmetology?

Professor Samuelsson: Russian patients are more receptive to everything new. For example, in Russia, hardware methods are very popular, in Sweden they are treated much more carefully. Patients in Sweden are not ready to trust new, little-tested technologies. We, both patients and doctors, take a more conservative approach to new techniques: waiting for approval from specialists and scientists. All technologies and equipment must be thoroughly researched. Moreover, we are interested in serious research by scientists. Beautiful photographs before and after the procedure are completely insufficient; this has nothing to do with science. In my opinion, there are too many new technologies in the beauty industry today and it is not always clear which of them are effective and safe and which are not. I believe that these “miracles” should be treated with great skepticism - they appear in abundance every year, but after some time it turns out that the results are not at all as wonderful as expected.

In Russia, I work at the DoctorPlastic clinic, whose management shares my approach and does not use insufficiently proven methods, the effectiveness of which is doubtful.

Corr.: Which plastic surgeries are more popular in Europe, and which in Russia?

Professor Samuelsson: In this regard, we cannot fail to mention mammoplasty. This type of plastic surgery is popular both in Europe and in Russia. The difference in the choice of sizes and shapes is interesting. For example, in Russia they prefer relatively larger sizes and use round implants more often than in Sweden. As for Swedes, in response to the question of what they want to achieve, you can most often hear: “I want to look natural.” Although, of course, everyone has their own understanding of naturalness, sometimes they are very different from each other (laughs).

Corr.: What are the main trends in the development of European and world plastic surgery in Europe?

Professor Samuelsson: Fat transfer is becoming more and more popular (and more effective). We have been using this technique for a long time and have learned to understand how it works in terms of short-term and long-term results. It became clear how best to use it. Having made sure that lipofilling is completely safe, we confidently use it for both aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. For example, for breast augmentation and breast reconstruction after mastectomy. Methods of using stem cells associated with lipofilling are becoming increasingly popular, because fat contains a large number of them. We also use methods using stem cells for restoration processes, to improve the quality and texture of the skin.

Corr.: Are there trends in Europe towards convergence between plastic surgery and dermatology?

Professor Samuelsson: Just 10-15 years ago these areas were clearly separated. Surgeons worked with a scalpel, dermatologists (cosmetologists) used their own equipment. We didn't interact. But gradually the understanding came that we must give patients what they need, and not just what we can do. That is, sometimes a scalpel is needed, sometimes a syringe, sometimes something else. Surgeons and cosmetologists from leading European clinics are increasingly working together and collaborating more and more closely.

In addition, the methods of plastic surgery themselves are becoming less invasive. Endoscopic technologies, endotins, lipofilling and other techniques are used that allow effective surgical correction without visible incisions and long-term rehabilitation. In this regard, plastic surgery is close to cosmetology in terms of invasiveness. In Russia, at the DoctorPlastic clinic, I am mostly involved in the implementation of just such techniques.

Corr.: Please tell us what you mainly specialize in - do you operate or perform non-surgical procedures?

Professor Samuelsson: In Sweden I devote the most time to plastic surgery: I have two full operating days a week. The remaining three days I am engaged in consultations and carrying out such cosmetic procedures as, for example, Softlifting.

Corr.: Returning to your Softlifting technique, which has become so popular in Russia, do you have any special principles for introducing gels and Botox?

Professor Samuelsson: I think that when any specialist works for a long time, he develops his own technique, his own vision. I always try to think not in two, but in three dimensions. As a surgeon, I know the face not only from the outside, but also from the inside: all its structures, the structure of soft tissues and bones. I know where I need to add volume and where I need to be careful not to hit a nerve. The method I developed meets the two main priorities of Swedish patients - it allows you to get the most natural result and guarantees the safety of the procedure itself. I am glad that these priorities were so highly appreciated by my Russian patients.

There is no need to look for the cheapest or most expensive filler, you should choose the best!

Reporter: What fillers do you prefer to use?

Professor Samuelsson: I work with Stylege, although I have tried many other fillers. There are now about one hundred and fifty types of fillers on the market, but it is better to choose a proven brand that has been around for a long time and meets the highest standards. There is no need to look for the cheapest or most expensive filler, you should choose the best one. Style is a very high quality filler. In general, there are only three or four brands with very good quality that I can really trust. As you know, many problems have arisen in the past when using new fillers that have not been properly tested.

Correspondent: How do you achieve such a significant reduction in the rehabilitation period?

Professor Samuelsson: Of course, there are individual reasons for swelling and bruising. Sometimes it all comes down to the physiological characteristics of the patient: some are prone to edema, some have high blood pressure, others take medications and vitamins that can contribute to edema. When working with fillers, the quality of the instrumentation is of great importance. If you use regular sharp needles instead of round-tipped cannulas, there is a high chance that you will hit small vessels and there will be more bruising. In addition, much depends on the amount of filler injected: the more of it, the deeper the filler is injected - the stronger the swelling, and on the quality of the filler itself - some gels cause more swelling and bruising than others.

It is important to properly prepare for the procedure or surgery. You need to know which medications and vitamins to avoid. At DoctorPlastic, we recommend abstaining from aspirin, which thins the blood, pure vitamin E and Omega-3 before the procedure. If the patient is aware of her tendency to edema, she is prescribed tranexamic acid one or two days before the procedure and one day after it.

Before and after plastic surgery, you need to take care of your skin.
