Orange is actively used in home cosmetology, not only because it contains a rich vitamin composition (in particular, natural antioxidant - C and “beauty group” - B), but also because it is ideal for skin of absolutely any type and age. Thanks to this versatility, citrus is useful in programs to combat teenage acne, is used as an effective preparation for delicate skin whitening, and is part of anti-aging complexes to preserve youthful skin.
Composition and properties of orange
Vitamin C in brightly colored fruits is off the charts. One fruit contains so much ascorbic acid that it is enough for a person’s daily needs.
Orange juice is rich in phytoncides, it restores all functions of the human body, activates metabolism, and tones.
Even the peel has a healing effect. Essential oils are hidden in it; they literally lift your spirits. If you place the peels in bags and place them around your apartment, you won’t even notice how you will calm down internally and a smile will light up your face more often!

Introduction
Essential oils (EOs), including citrus oils, find a wide variety of uses, including for human health. Lemon essential oil, which is similar in composition to orange essential oil (70% limonene, 2-6% citral, small amounts of geranyl acetate, myrcene, citronellol, etc.) is used as a sedative and hypotensive agent. The effectiveness of this use of essential oils increases when combined with psychotherapy methods. The latter is the basis for studying the possibility of using orange essential oil in combination with a psychorelaxation program as a stress-limiting agent for people whose work is associated with psychophysical stress and risk. These include employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
The purpose of this work is to study the possibility of improving the psychophysiological state of employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations using orange essential oil and a psychorelaxation program.
Objects and Methods
The study was carried out on 19 male employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations aged 25-40 years. A similar group of the same size served as a control. The subjects in the control group were at rest for 20 minutes with the psychorelaxation recording turned on. The subjects of the experimental group were in the same room for the same time with the same psychorelaxation recording turned on and the evaporation of orange essential oil into the atmosphere, in which limonene predominates (92.0%). Myrcene (2.1%) and a number of minor components are present in much smaller quantities.
The concentration of volatile components of EOs in the room atmosphere was 1 mg/m3. Testing was carried out before and after procedures.
To assess the effect of the procedures on the cardiovascular system, heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (BP) were measured. To assess the effect of EM on the nervous system, we used the SAN test, a proofreading test in the letter version, and a test for memorizing 10 words. The obtained data were processed statistically using paired t - Student's test.
Results and discussion
Initially (before aroma exposure) ADS in both groups did not have significant differences and was within the high norm according to JNC6 (Table 1). ADD was initially lower in the control group (optimum) than in the experimental group (within the high norm according to JNC6). Heart rate is within normal limits. The impact of the psychorelaxation program (control) was accompanied only by a tendency towards a decrease in ADD.
Table 1 Effect of relaxation with orange essential oil on blood pressure and heart rate
Group | Experience initially | Control initially | Ro/k ref | Experience after | Ro D/P< | Control after | Rk D/P< | Ro/k pos. |
ADS | 139,16 ±3,05 | 136,58 ±1,31 | 132,32 ±3,28 | 0,002 | 136,00 ±1,36 | 0,01 | ||

Heart rate | 75,79 ±2,17 | 71,05 ±2,60 | 73,89 ±2,16 | 70,74 ±2,41 |
In the experiment (exposure to orange essential oil against the background of a psychorelaxation program), a significant decrease in ADP and a tendency towards a decrease in ADP were observed. As a result, blood pressure in the experimental group became significantly lower than in the control group, and heart rate remained significantly higher.
An assessment of the psycho-emotional state of the subjects using the SAN test shows that initially in the experimental group the indicators of vigor and performance were significantly higher and the indicators of tension were lower (Table 2). After the psychorelaxation program, a significant decrease in tension was observed.

In the experiment (the effect of orange essential oil against the background of a psychorelaxation program), a significant improvement in the general state and well-being was observed. The differences between the experimental and control groups in the final state consisted of significantly better values of general condition, well-being, mood and vigor in the experimental group.
An assessment of mental performance (correction test, letter version) shows that initially the groups generally do not have significant differences in speed of work and only a tendency towards a greater number of errors in the 1st minute of the test in the control group.
Table 3 The effect of relaxation with orange essential oil on mental performance (proofreading test, letter version).

Errors 2, sign/min | control | 1,37±0,49 | 1,53±0,43 |
experience | 0,89±0,46 | 1D1±0.25 |
After the psychorelaxation program (control), no significant dynamics of indicators were observed. After exposure to orange essential oil against the background of a psychorelaxation program (experiment), a tendency was noted to decrease the speed of work in both minutes of the test and a significant increase in the number of errors in the 1st minute of the test. As a result, the final speed of work at the 1st minute of the test in the experiment turned out to be significantly lower than in the control.
Thus, we can only talk about a slight inhibitory effect of orange essential oil on mental performance.
Assessment of short-term memory (10-word test) shows that there is no significant difference between the groups at baseline. As a result of psychorelaxation and aroma-psychorelaxation procedures, no significant dynamics in short-term memory indicators were found (Table 4).
Table 4 Effect of relaxation with orange essential oil on short-term memory
Group | Before the procedure | After the procedure |
Experience | 6,11±0,21 | 6,00±0,20 |
Control | 6,26±0,10 | 6,58±0,32 |
Conclusions:
Aromapsychorelaxation procedure with orange essential oil:
-has a moderate (significant for ADS and tendency for ADD) hypotensive effect.
-reduces (at the level of a trend) the speed of work and increases the number of errors in a proofreading test.
-slightly (tendency) improves the psycho-emotional state mainly due to indicators of general condition and well-being.
- has virtually no effect on short-term memory.

What are the benefits of orange for the face?
Thanks to many chemical elements hidden under the orange peel, the fruit improves the skin of the face:
- A high dose of vitamin C delays aging and improves skin regeneration
- Tones and nourishes the skin
- Increases blood circulation, whitens skin
- Vitamins A, H, B9 give the skin a boost of energy
- Thanks to organic acids, the orange face mask is also an excellent peeling.
- Reduces enlarged pores
- Has a softening effect on the skin
- Eliminates swelling
- Fights acne, has anti-inflammatory and healing effects.
The benefits of orange for women's body
Citrus fruit will be very useful for the fair sex due to its composition. The antioxidants included in its composition slow down the aging process and help maintain skin in good condition. Regular consumption of oranges keeps it soft and elastic. Also, these substances prevent the development of cancer. In addition to antioxidants, orange citrus contains limonoids, which also prevent free radicals from actively developing and protect the female body from breast, stomach and intestinal cancer. It is recommended that pregnant women include oranges in their diet. Thanks to the presence of vitamin B9, disturbances in the development of the unborn baby can be avoided.
Rules for using face masks with orange
Speaking about whether it is possible to make face masks every day, in which the main ingredient is orange, I would immediately like to note that this fruit is very irritating to the skin, so the following rules must be followed:
- Only freshly squeezed juice is healthy.
- First test the mask on your wrist for 15 minutes. If redness appears or you feel any discomfort, then it is better not to risk it by “decorating” your face with an allergen.
- You can keep orange mixtures on your face for no more than 10 minutes to avoid irritation. On very oily skin, the mask should remain on for a maximum of 20 minutes.
Indications and contraindications
Indications for use:
Orange face mask is effective for all skin types. If you want to soften, refresh and nourish your skin, reduce wrinkles, age spots and freckles, if acne and enlarged pores cause you discomfort, then you simply cannot find a more effective product.
Contraindications:
however, masks made from juicy fruit also have their disadvantages. Orange is a strong allergen, but even non-allergy sufferers should still not use masks more than once a week. Orange also increases photosensitivity, and you will have to use sunscreen. If there are pustules and herpes in the active phase, or skin damage, it is better to hold off on using masks.
If the skin of your face gives an allergic reaction to orange, but you still want to nourish it, then we recommend trying fruit face masks without this citrus.
How to use orange cosmetic ice
Rubbing the face with cosmetic ice leads to a sharp narrowing of blood vessels. The procedure has a toning, rejuvenating and tightening effect on the skin. Ice is prepared according to different recipes:
- Classical. Juice is squeezed out of citrus fruits. Pour it into molds and put it in the freezer for a couple of hours.
- From mineral water. Mineral water is mixed with orange juice in a 1:1 ratio. Pour into molds and freeze in the freezer.
Cosmetologists do not recommend making ice from packaged juice, as it contains dyes, flavors and preservatives.
Rub the skin with ice cubes 2 times a day - morning and evening. After 15 minutes, remove the remaining juice with a cotton pad soaked in mineral water or herbal decoction.
Infuses vitamin C for soft skin
The juice perfectly reduces pores, tones and helps prevent the appearance of acne and wrinkles.
Take one orange and squeeze the juice out of it, which you immediately apply to your cleansed face, and then, after waiting a few seconds, immediately rinse with cool water. The vitamin C in the juice will instantly make your skin incredibly smooth and soft.

Interesting facts from the history of Orange
Monument to Orange in Odessa
In May 1794, Catherine II issued a decree on the construction of a large seaport in Odessa, but the empress did not have time to implement it.
The new Emperor Paul I decided to cancel his mother’s decree and withdraw the financial resources allocated for the construction of the port.
At that time, at least 12,000 inhabitants lived in Odessa. Odessa residents, having learned about this, sent 3,000 oranges to the emperor . Paul I was a lover of these exotic fruits. Having received such a sweet gift, the emperor renewed the decree of Catherine II on a loan of 250,000 gold rubles in fulfillment of the will of the deceased empress. This is how oranges helped the development and prosperity of Odessa. And grateful Odessa residents erected a monument to Orange in 2004.
Orange in medicine
The medicinal benefits of oranges have been proven by numerous studies. It is an additional component to traditional medicine in the treatment of various diseases, but there is a list of diseases for which the use of orange is prohibited.
For pancreatitis
Inflammation of the pancreas requires the exclusion from the patient’s diet of any product that can lead to irritation of the mucous membrane of the digestive tract. Pain, heartburn, bloating, severe vomiting and diarrhea - such a reaction of the body is possible after drinking an orange or its juice, because they act as an irritant.
For gastritis
When the stomach is affected by gastritis, oranges have a negative effect on its mucous membrane. Therefore, eating it is prohibited, especially during periods of exacerbation of the disease. But in cases of low acidity, small doses of this product are acceptable.
For the intestines
This citrus is very useful for a normally functioning intestine. The abundant fiber content promotes a feeling of satiety and activates intestinal cleansing processes.
For constipation
When a person has problems emptying the intestines due to constipation, the best help in this will be a couple of oranges eaten before bed. Regular use of the product will make your stool normal and your bowel function complete. Sour taste is an essential part of the diet if you have constipation.
For gout
Swelling and redness of the joints due to gout occurs due to the accumulation of uric acid crystals in them. Vitamin C helps relieve some symptoms of the disease and slow down its progression. The increased content of ascorbic acid in orange makes it a very important and necessary product in the daily diet of such patients.
For cholecystitis
Patients suffering from this disease are contraindicated in acidic foods, which include orange.
Peeling
From now on, stop throwing the scabs in the trash and start collecting them as they will help you get rid of a number of skin problems.
But before using the peel for cosmetic procedures, do not forget to wash it and dry it in the sun or in the oven.
Allow the crusts to dry until they crumble easily when pressed with your fingers.
Wash and dry the peels, then grind them into powder - this is an excellent natural peeling remedy.
Grind all the peels into a fine powder and use it as a peeling, which does not damage the skin, but exfoliates it perfectly.
Preparing the peel for use for cosmetic purposes
To prepare products for skin whitening, you can use the zest in fresh or dried form, its effect does not become less effective. Most often, dried orange peel is added to whitening masks. Preparation of the zest consists of three stages:
- Peel the fruit and place it carefully in a dry, sunny place.
- After several days (a week will be enough), the dried zest will need to be crushed using a blender or coffee grinder.
- Place the finished powder in a cool place for several hours.
After this, the zest can be used directly to make whitening masks. There are many recipes based on crushed orange peel that can provide gentle whitening to the skin. Since these masks do not contain artificial ingredients, they will not only be useful, but also safe. Masks will help you get rid of age spots and unhealthy complexion; it is important to choose the right recipe. As a rule, orange zest is added to other natural ingredients (milk, honey, yogurt), thereby the resulting product will lighten the skin, moisturize it and provide additional nutrition.
